However, there are many other great things to do in Louisville in May besides the Kentucky Derby. Head to Whiskey Row and explore the museums, distilleries and great restaurants along this historic street. If you’re looking for great restaurants in Louisville, don’t miss Repeal Oak-Fired Steakhouse or Doc Crow’s Southern Smokehouse & Bar.

If you’re looking for one of the best places to visit in the US in May, you can’t beat Rocky Mountain National Park. Fly into Denver International Airport and then drive 90 minutes to Estes Park. Best of all, May is a great time to visit because the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet.
Temperatures are mild, with a daily high of 51°F and a daily low of 33°F. Although it rains about eleven days this month, that means the meadows are green, with plenty of elk grazing the area with their young. You’ll see plenty of wildflowers as Indian paintbrush, forget-me-nots, and alpine avens are all in full bloom.
If you time your trip for Memorial Day weekend, you can take a scenic drive along Trail Ridge Road. It’s the highest continuously paved road in the country as it reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet and offers stunning views of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.
Other fun things to do in Rocky Mountain National Park include hiking the Upper Beaver Meadow Loop, Deer Mountain, and Little Horseshoe Park Trails. Just be sure to stick to lower elevations as many of the higher-elevation trails are still covered in snow.
3. Gulf Shores, Alabama

Beach lovers can head to Tybee Island, which is just 25 minutes away. The water is warm enough to swim in May.

Casa Rio is the famous restaurant along The Riverwalk with its colorful umbrellas outside and is worth a visit!
Also, don't forget to visit the world-famous Alamo: the site of the Battle of the Alamo between Texas and Mexico in the Texas Revolution.

The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms are the most popular. You can book a trolley tour to see several of the mansions with admission to The Breakers!
You should also take the opportunity to walk the Cliff Walk - a nature trail with scenic views of the ocean and mansions - and go shopping on Bellevue Avenue and Thames Street. Some murals take up the entire exterior walls of buildings in this coastal city.
Beyond the beach, Virginia Beach has hiking trails for all levels. At First Landing State Park, the Bald Cypress Trail guides visitors through a freshwater wetland with intriguing bald cypress trees. Take your bike to pedal the six-mile Cape Henry Trail in this state park.
14. Antelope Canyon, Arizona

While there will be crowds, to be honest, Antelope Canyon is always crowded unless you go in the winter. One way to avoid the crowds is to visit one of the lesser-known canyons, like Antelope Canyon X.
There are many other amazing things to see while you’re in the area, such as the Horseshoe Bend Overlook. A short hike will take you to the overlook, which has one of the most incredible views over the Colorado River. Lake Powell is also nearby, which is a magnificent lake that looks like a canyon with steep walls and rock faces. Don’t miss Glen Canyon Dam, the second largest artificial dam in the United States after Hoover Dam.
If you’re looking for a place to eat, head to Birdhouse, one of the best restaurants in Page, the closest town to Antelope Canyon. You’ll find delicious fried chicken and craft beer in a charming setting.
15. Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
The Columbia River Gorge is one of the most beautiful areas in Oregon, and the best time to visit is in May! May is the height of spring in the Pacific Northwest and a great time for hiking and sightseeing. Temperatures warm up from an average of 47°F to about 63°F, making the weather perfect for cool hiking.
The main attraction of spring in Oregon is the wildflowers that start blooming in early May! Take a wildflower hike in the Columbia River Gorge to see a display of yellow and purple flowers. Some of the best places to visit are the Rowena Plateau and Memalooze Hills near Hood River. If you’re staying in Portland, you can book a half-day tour from the city to enjoy the falls on a hiking adventure.
Spring is when the gorge’s waterfalls are at their peak. Drive along the Falls Corridor and stop at some of Oregon’s best waterfalls, including Latorrelle Falls, Multnomah Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls. All of these waterfalls are a half-mile hike or less, but there are also longer waterfall hikes in the gorge.
To get to the Columbia River Gorge, fly into Portland International Airport. From there, most of the places mentioned above are an hour’s drive or less. It’s a great nearby city to stay near Hood River Gorge. The Hood River Hotel is a beautiful historic hotel located in the heart of the city, or you can stay in a rental home nearby. Hood River is full of great breweries, with Full Fail Brewing and Freem Family Brewers being two popular ones.
16. Jackson Hole, Wyoming
Jackson Hole, Wyoming is a great destination to visit in May. It’s the perfect time to enjoy fewer crowds, scenic drives, and wildlife viewing. Temperatures are still a bit chilly in May, so be prepared for rain or snow in May!
A visit to Grand Teton National Park in May is a must for a Jackson Hole vacation. Plan a day to drive the 42-mile full loop road through Grand Teton. Some of the park’s visitor centers, lodges, and other services may not be open until late May.
When viewing wildlife around Jackson Hole, be sure to follow any posted signs as some areas may be closed in May due to bear activity and other wildlife management.

You can do this by visiting Grant Farm (where they undergo a best-in-class training program) or by taking a Budweiser Brewery VIP Clydesdale Tour.
Get lost inside the City Museum for a full day of quirky curiosities. It’s a mix of art installation, playground, and science center, and it’s fun for all ages. The St. Louis Zoo is definitely worth a visit, free of charge. It ranks at the top of the rankings, along with the San Diego Zoo, for its habitat, cleanliness, and high-quality animal care. Every May, they host the annual Make Tracks Run-Walk Race to benefit Children’s Hospital.
No trip to St. Louis is complete without trying Ted Drew’s Frozen Custard, St. Louis-style pizza, gooey butter cake, pork steak, or a favorite microbrewery like Schlafly.
19. Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona
As the most visited national park in the United States (4.53 million visitors in 2021 alone!), the Grand Canyon has long captivated visitors as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. May is one of the best times to visit, as the summer crowds have not yet arrived and the temperatures are still pleasant, albeit warm.
While the popular South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open year-round, access to the less visited (but equally beautiful) North Rim opens in mid-May. So, if you’re interested in hiking and touring the iconic Rim-to-Rim Route in May – you’re in luck! In May, reservations are relatively easy to make, and Grand Canyon accommodations are more affordable. If you’re not tied to the summer school holiday timeframe, there’s no downside to visiting the Grand Canyon in May.
At the South Rim, visit Grand Canyon Village, which is home to several historic buildings, lodges, shops, and curiosities. Also, be sure to hike a section of the Rim Trail, which starts at Grand Canyon Village and ends at Hermit's Rest. It offers incredible views of the canyon and is relatively flat, with parts of the trail even wheelchair accessible. If you're up for a challenge, take the Bright Angel Trail down into the canyon, stop at any of the other stops, or head to Indian Garden Campground to soak in the creek. If you choose the latter, the nine-mile round trip is a tough and strenuous hike.
