01. New York
I’m going to start with my first international solo female travel destination.
Although I had been traveling solo since before New York, New York was my first international solo destination.
I was in the US for a month-long trip that included some work and traveling with friends and family from all walks of life.
But while I was there, I had to choose it as my first international solo female travel destination because a friend of mine in New York was moving elsewhere.
And I loved the place. For a first-time solo traveler, figuring out everything on my own—from where to stay to where to go—in an international location was incredibly exciting.
If given the chance, I would spend the day at the Met and see every musical in Times Square, while also eating delicious food from all over the world.
It’s been over ten years since then, and it definitely laid the foundation for my long-term solo travel.
However, if you only have a few hours to spare in New York, why not try finding an hourly hotel near you on Dayuse?
02. Japan
I just returned from Japan and it is without a doubt one of the best destinations for solo female travelers in terms of safety.
I have walked all over Japan, even late at night, and I have never felt unsafe for a minute.
The public transportation system and the friendliness of the people are two of the reasons I visited Japan.
Yes, it can be quite daunting for a first-time solo traveler and I would definitely recommend Japan to more experienced solo travelers. I would definitely rate Japan as one of the best countries for solo female travelers.
03. Philippines
If you ask me what my favorite beach destination is for solo travel, the answer would definitely be the Philippines.
With its fairytale beaches and some of the friendliest people in the world, it is no wonder that the Philippines is at the top of every solo female traveler’s list.
But the Philippines is not just about its beaches, and I can’t wait to return to this one of the best destinations for solo female travelers.
And the mangoes there are so delicious that I would give my life for them, and the marine life is a dream for every diver.
04. Lisbon
I started my first solo European trip from Lisbon and for that reason Lisbon will always be special to me.
And I have to add that it is undoubtedly one of the safest cities I have visited in Europe and it is also quite unique compared to other cities in Europe.
I spent my days wandering around the city, taking in the views from the various miradores, riding the famous yellow tram, visiting the nearby town of Sintra, and lazing around the city’s various squares.
Even after 10 years, Lisbon is one of my favorite European capital cities, because it gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace, like every solo female traveler.
05. Mexico
I never thought I would be living in Mexico with my husband for a few months, and everyone warned me that it was a very unsafe country.
But during those months, I wandered around Mexico. Most of the time alone, because my husband was always busy with work.
And that’s how I fell in love with a country that I had no intention of visiting as a solo female tourist.
I still wouldn’t call it the safest country. But as long as you know where to go in Mexico and don’t be fooled, you’ll fall in love with Mexico like I did.
06. Paris
To many, Paris is confusing and dirty. But to me, it’s just pure love. It wasn’t always like that.
I’ve been to Paris a few times before. But it was on my first solo trip to Paris in 2016 that I fell in love with the city. Just by walking around. And since then, I’ve been there several times, both alone and with my partner, and each time I’ve fallen in love with it more.
After all, it's the city of love, and how can you not fall in love with it? If you give it a little time, Paris can make a place for itself in your heart, just like it did for me.
07. Switzerland
For years I had been waiting to go to Switzerland with my partner. Because I wanted it to be a special memory for both of us.
And when we went, everything I had dreamed of was there and I couldn’t believe it had taken me so long to get there.
The serene mountain scenery and the excellent road and public transport system. Everything else impressed me except the price.
Since then I have been to Switzerland alone and if you are on a budget, you definitely need to plan accordingly when visiting Switzerland.
08. Seychelles
Most people think of Seychelles as a romantic travel destination. But I ended up going there alone and fell in love with this small island (or archipelago) in Africa.
And during my stay at my luxury resort in Mahe, I did nothing but wander around the islands, swim in the sea, eat and drink and play with the turtles. In that respect, Constance Aphilia was a dream and there was so much to do during my 6-day trip.
And don't forget to splurge and treat yourself to a spa while you're there. It was one of the best spa experiences I've ever had.
09. Dubai
I can't count how many times I've been to Dubai because my sister and her family live there.
I don't usually go there alone, but there have been a few times when I was in transit and they weren't around.
And as a solo female traveler, Dubai was the first place that made me feel safe taking a cab at any time of night. They even have female drivers specifically for solo women.
10. Albania
Most people think Albania is a dangerous country and my husband was very against going there.
But I went anyway and Albania is still one of my favorite solo road trip destinations.
And despite the language barrier, the people there were so warm and hospitable.
And the places were amazing. The beauty of Greece, but without the price tag, and I've also had some of my favorite stays of my life here.
It's not a very convenient place for public transportation and the best way to get around like I did is to rent a car.
But renting a car is very affordable and I look forward to going back there one day.
11. Austria
I've been to Austria alone three times and each time I fall in love with Austria a little more. It's definitely one of the best countries for women traveling alone in terms of safety.
Those Alps can take anyone's breath away and you can immerse yourself in the coffee and cake culture of Vienna or decide to wake up to a beautiful view in one of the towns in the Austrian Alps. Not to mention Hallstatt.
And Vienna has one of my favorite European Christmas markets.
12. Norway
I started this year by spending 10 days in Norway and I went there to see the Northern Lights, which was undoubtedly one of the most magical experiences of my life.
I would love to go back to Norway for a road trip in the summer one day.
But doing winter activities with reindeer and huskies in the Norwegian winter was definitely a great start to the year.
And despite being so remote, I was able to travel around the country alone using public transportation and met some wonderful fellow solo female travelers throughout the country.
Another country where we need to plan accordingly, as it is one of the most expensive destinations for solo female travelers.
13. Vietnam
If budget is a constraint, Vietnam is definitely the cheapest place I have been to as a solo female traveler.
I spent days dodging the countless bikes on the streets of Hanoi, took a solo cruise to Halong Bay, and witnessed the magic of lanterns in the beautiful village of Hoi An.
And the vegetarian food here was amazing, and I even took a Vietnamese cooking class in Hoi An while I was there.
It’s also a great place to connect with other solo female travelers.
14. London
Although one of my best friends lives in London and I’ve been there over five times, I always have plenty of time to explore on my own when she’s at work.
I’ve always found it to be a very safe city for solo female travelers. Just make sure to keep your phone safe from people who want to steal it.
And the best part is, there’s so much to do in London that even though I’ve been there multiple times, I’ve only managed to do a few of them.
My favorite is to wander from park to park in Hyde Park in the fall. Rain can throw your plans off track, but always be prepared for rain when you’re in London.
15. Germany
Another destination I’ve been to more than five times, and always as a solo female traveler.
This was one of my solo female road trip destinations and if you love driving, you definitely need to drive on the Autobahn.
Germany also has some of the best hiking trails and I spent a few days traveling around Germany alone last winter.
P.S. Their trains are never on time.
16. Mauritius
For me, places are people, and that’s one of the reasons why Mauritius will always be special to me.
I traveled to Mauritius during a very difficult time in my personal life and on this trip I met a fellow solo female traveler from Ghana/UK.
We spent days walking around Mauritius and talking about how similar our cultures are when it comes to women.
She helped me to solidify my belief in female friendship and I still keep in touch with her today.
And Mauritius has some of the best beaches I’ve ever seen.
17. Thailand
Another destination I’ve been to countless times. Both alone and with my partner.
It’s a very affordable destination and you can spend days on end, island hopping like I did, or shopping on the streets of Bangkok.
And it’s a great choice for first-time solo female travelers.
Do your research before you go to find out which islands are the best for solo female travelers, and it could prove to be one of the best solo travel destinations for women.
18. Bali
For years, I thought Bali was an overhyped destination and avoided going there. But after going there, my opinion changed and it really is a safe haven for solo female travelers.
You can spend the day in the rice fields of Ubud or immerse yourself in the digital nomad culture of Canggu or Seminyak, party all night in beach clubs or spend the day learning to surf in Nusa Dua.
They are one of the most hospitable places in the world and they took great care of me when I was sick in Bali.
19. Budapest
This is another affordable European solo travel destination that should be on your list.
I only went once in the winter but it was definitely a memorable solo trip.
And if you want to go from one dive bar to another, Budapest is definitely one of the best places to go. Some of the parties there were really great.
Even though I don’t drink, those few nights were memorable.
20. Kerala
Kerala was where I first started traveling solo, and that’s why it made it to this list of destinations for solo female travelers.
I know that many people are skeptical when they think of India as one of the best destinations for solo female travelers.
But India is a huge country, and some parts of it are definitely safer than others. If you’re traveling solo to India for the first time, then a place like Kerala is a must-visit.
They have one of the highest literacy rates in the country and most places are pretty safe.
Hit the beaches of Kochi, or visit the backwaters of Alleppey, or the countless tea gardens scattered across the country.
