1. Boston

Boston

Location: Massachusetts

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 42°F and Low 28°F; 9 days of rain

Reasons to visit Boston in December: Winter activities like sledding and ice skating, Boston Common Tree Lighting Festival

Boston is made to be enjoyed in the winter, and averages around 37°F. While beautiful in the summer, I believe winter in the American city is highly underrated (though cold)!

After sledding on Flagstaff Hill in Boston Common, you can warm up with some New England clam chowder at Union Oyster House or hot chocolate at L.A. Burdick before continuing your activities in the same park.

Boston also has many amazing day trips that are great in the winter (including some of the best state parks in New England). But don’t forget to dress warmly!

Here, you can do everything from ice skating on the Boston Common Frog Pond to watching the lighting of a giant tree at the Boston Common Tree Lighting Festival, which features food, activities, and performances.

Some of the best things to do in Boston in December include shopping at the Sowa Winter Festival and Holiday Market, seeing The Nutcracker at the Boston Ballet, and having a few beers at Samuel Adams Brewery.

And of course, you can’t miss a New England Patriots game (Steelers fans here—so this is for international visitors). Don’t forget to grab one of the best lobster rolls in town!

2. Moab

Location: Utah

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 45°F and Low 22°F; 3 days of rain

Reasons to visit Moab in December: Hiking opportunities in nearby national parks, fewer winter crowds

The contrast of snow on the red rocks, combined with empty parking lots and fewer crowds, make Moab worth visiting during the winter months.

The weather is quite cold in the winter, with average highs around 45°F and lows around 22°F; however, once the rocks are heated up by the sun, you won't feel much of a chill.

If you're visiting Moab for a bit of hiking, be sure to head to the La Sal Mountains where you can see the Colorado River flowing through the canyons of Dead Horse State Park. Sometimes the trails are covered in a dusting of snow, but the intense heat of the sun often melts it away by afternoon.

Moab is a great base for Arches National Park, where you'll find the world's largest arch, called 'Landscape Arch'. It is also home to the famous Delicate Arch rock formations.

3. South Padre Island

Location: Texas

Average temperature and precipitation: High 72°F and low 57°F; 3 days of rain

Reasons to visit South Padre Island in December: Fewer crowds but still nice temperatures, bird watching

Ironically, South Padre Island is a place where people go to escape the winter weather. A popular spring break destination, don’t dismiss it as a winter hotspot. While locals might think December is cold, if you’re coming from the north, you certainly won’t!

With average winter temperatures in the 60s or 70s and lows in the 50s, most days are sunny and mild.

If you don’t mind getting in the water this time of year, there are plenty of water activities to keep you busy. You can bring your own kayak or paddle board or rent one locally from Eh Brah SUP, and paddle along the Gulf Coast, or take a boat tour or a relaxing restaurant cruise!

In addition to water activities, bird watching is another popular activity as South Padre Island is halfway between the migratory checkpoints.

4. New York City

Location: New York

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 44°F and Low 31°F; 8 days of rain

Reasons to visit NYC in December: Famous for Christmas and NYE events, ice skating at Rockefeller Center

Winter is the ideal time to visit NYC as it has fewer crowds, mostly due to the cold. December is a bit chilly; however, it gets worse in January and February.

The Rockefeller Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center stays lit up for over a month. It’s adjacent to the ice rink, where people skate under festive lights and elaborate decorations (so famous in many movies!).

Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan is bustling with its legendary holiday sales, seasonal displays, and events.

The New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square is one of the city’s most anticipated events, with afterparties that last all over the block until dawn. You’ll also find seasonal shows on Broadway and at the New York Ballet.

While December is a great time to visit the Big Apple, keep in mind that prices skyrocket at this time of year!

5. Sedona

Location: Arizona

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 60°F and Low 34°F; 3 days of rain

Reasons to visit Sedona in December: Hiking opportunities, stargazing, Red Rock Festival of Lights

Sedona is least crowded in the winter, with average high temperatures in the mid-50s, while average lows range from the high 20s to the low 30s.

The city of Arizona does get snow; however, once the sunlight hits the red rocks, it doesn’t last long. Sedona is located between two state parks and four famous wilderness areas.

There is an endless list of trails of varying difficulty levels to enjoy the landscape. You can enjoy the breeze during a jeep tour deep into the desert or stay in a cabin overlooking it!

Speaking of winter events, the Red Rock Festival of Lights features over 6,000 luminarias that light up its grounds, along with live entertainment. You’ll also find plenty of amazing day trips from Sedona that are definitely worth checking out if you can extend your stay a little longer.

6. Seattle

Location: Washington

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 45°F and Low 36°F; 14 days of rain

Reasons to visit Seattle in December: Coffee, day trips, easily warm up with Bellevue Botanic Garden Lights

Seattle’s average temperature during the winter is around the 40s, sometimes lower, and the city sometimes gets snow, but not consistently.

Every inch of Bellevue Botanic Garden is lit up with lights, and during the winter months, the entire garden and its facilities are adorned with more seasonal and holiday accents. Getting into the festive spirit is a must!

Pike Place Market is a must-see when visiting Seattle, especially during the winter months when seasonal vendors and handmade crafts are on display. The neon lights are even more prominent with the Christmas lights, adding to the city’s market appeal.

The original Starbucks is also located in Seattle, and you can warm up with a delicious coffee before exploring what the city has to offer.

If you’re looking to get away for a bit, you can check out my winter day trips from the Seattle guide – otherwise, you can hop on one of the city’s local ferries and head somewhere more in tune with nature (easily).

7. Las Vegas

Location: Nevada

Average Temperature and Precipitation: High 60°F and Low 27°F; 1 day of rain

Reasons to visit Vegas in December: Less crowds and beautiful temperatures, Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens lights

During this season, the city is more accessible everywhere due to fewer crowds. Tickets for entertainment and performances in the city, like Cirque du Soleil shows, are easy to find and can sometimes be cheaper if you find the right deal.

One of Sin City’s most famous landmarks, the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, is transformed into a winter wonderland with festive lights and decorations for the Majestic Holiday Magic show.

The LINQ Promenade is also transformed with its Christmas tree lighting, and the adjacent Flamingo Las Vegas becomes the center of festive holiday entertainment as it hosts its annual Flamingo Holiday Festival.

Visitors can also participate in seasonal activities like ice skating at the Cosmopolitan’s famous Boulevard Pool, which transforms into an ice rink!

If you’re looking to get out of the city, there are plenty of day trips to choose from. My favorite is Valley of Fire State Park, one of the best state parks in the country.

8. North Pole

Location: Alaska

Average temperature and precipitation: High 1°F and low -16°F; 3 days of rain

Reasons to visit the North Pole in December: Home of Santa Claus (USA), the beauty of snowy Alaska

The small Alaskan town located at the North Pole is named after Santa Claus’ home and headquarters, where he delivers Christmas presents.

The average temperature in the small town is 1°F and the low is around -16°F. Yes, it’s freezing cold, but I don’t think you’d expect anything less from a place called the ‘North Pole’!

The city's main street, Santa Claus Lane, is decorated with festive candy designs and striped light poles all year round.

Santa Claus House, where Santa officially resides (which I object to as someone who lives in Finnish Lapland), is open to visitors and thousands of people come every year to see the house of locally made goods, gift shops and pastry shops, as well as a statue of Santa.

One of the most popular activities during the Christmas season, especially with children, is to have a picture taken with Santa in front of his house! When leaving town, pick up a postcard from the gift shop as a souvenir.

9. Sanibel Island

Location: Florida

Average temperature and precipitation: High 77°F and low 57°F; 3 days of rain

Reasons to visit Sanibel Island in December: Nice winter temperatures and little rainfall, fewer crowds

In the winter, Sanibel’s year-round subtropical climate cools to near-perfect temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s, making it a high-season destination and a warm-weather destination to visit.

There are occasional snowfalls and freezing temperatures, but the island and its many resorts and hotels don’t stress too much about it, and neither should you.

Instead, focus on Sanibel Island’s many beautiful, sandy beaches, such as the popular Bowman’s Beach, Blind Pass Beach, and Lighthouse Beach Park.

A unique Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum features more than 30 exhibits devoted entirely to shells and mollusks.

Additionally, conservationist J.N. "Ding" Darling Island converted one-third of the island into a wildlife refuge, and for a reasonable fee, you can not only tour the area but also help fund wildlife conservation!

10. Bethlehem

Location: Pennsylvania

Average temperature and precipitation: High 56°F and low 47°F; 7 days of rain

Reasons to visit Bethlehem in December: Nicknamed Christmas City USA, the city's market

Christmas City USA was founded in the mid-18th century by a German count and a small group of religious Moravians, who together named and named the settlement Bethlehem.

The bookstore they founded in 1745, known as the Moravian Book Shop, is today known as the oldest continuously operating bookstore in the world.

Built and decorated with German-inspired motifs and architecture, the Christmas City Village features a Christmas market that takes place at two different locations along Main Street on weekends during the holiday season. Popular handmade foods, pastries, and gifts are sold here!

To learn more about the historic town and its Christmas charm, costumed tours are offered several times each week by guides. They educate their groups about the town’s Moravian roots and how it became known as the nation’s Christmas City.

Location: Colorado

Average temperature and precipitation: High 35°F and low 11°F; 8 days of rain

Reasons to visit Aspen in December: Skiing, breathtaking alpine coasters, lots of festivals, and fun

A paradise for nature lovers and thrill seekers, Aspen is home to four resorts nestled in the Rocky Mountains. It’s a great getaway from Denver and other parts of the state.

Buttermilk Ski Resort is the ideal place for beginners with five lifts and a large number of its 21 miles of trails rated as easy.

At Snowmass, you’ll find four different mountains:

  • Aspen Snowmass has over 3,300 acres of skiable land with trails of all difficulty levels and a 4,406-foot vertical drop
  • Buttermilk has a lot for kids and beginners

Also in the Aspen area is the White River National Forest, which is home to the Maroon Bells, a popular and scenic hiking destination. Please be warned that this is not for beginners and can be very dangerous in the winter (and even the summer) months.

I have, personally, had a friend injured here. But you can take in the views without doing the hikes if you wish!

Location: California

If you want to keep the holiday season alive while you’re in Newport Beach, the Christmas Boat Parade is a five-night event in December that features boats decked out in decorations, holiday lights, and even floats across Newport Bay.

It’s no wonder it’s consistently rated as one of the best beach towns in the state!

The park's natural attractions are particularly highlighted in the winter, and one of the most famous is High Falls Gorge, where you can see the ice and even do some climbing (with a guide, of course).

Natural Stone Bridge and Caves Park is famous for its marble caves hidden in the snow, and the huge ice floes of the Ausable River frozen in the Ausable Chasms Gorge are two of the park's biggest attractions!

Other popular nearby activities include ice climbing (as briefly mentioned above), winter hiking, and snowmobiling.
